A Different Type of Crafting

Don't worry! I'm still around and have been super busy crafting... a different type of crafting... I'm making a person! We're expecting the newest addition to our family in December. :-)

The first trimester was a bit rough, but I'm finally getting my energy back and putting it towards some great new projects for the baby.

Ok, so this first one isn't REALLY for the baby, but it will be in the hospital with us so it kind of counts right?  I'm attempting to tackle the Amy Butler Weekender Bag for my hospital bag. If you've ever googled this bag, then you know there are lots of blog entries with tips on how to get through it. I've heard it's tough, but it just looks too cute to pass up!

I'll be making a few modifications to the pattern - as if trying to make the bag in the first place wasn't enough of a challenge :-p

  • Interior pockets - there are none in the pattern, which is pretty surprising. At the very least I'll be adding a big elastic pocket, divided into sections along one side of the bag.
  • Longer handles - I'm extending the handles a bit so the bad can be put over my shoulder.
  • Outside zipper pocket - this may make more sense once I get to it and have pictures, but I'm planning to add a zipper to the top of one of the outside slip pockets and turn one pocket into 2! I love to have zipper pockets on the outside of bags to store things securely and in easy reach - like boarding passes!

So far I've only gotten to cutting out the fabric - which is no small task. I divided this up into 2 sessions as leaning over my growing bump is becoming a bit difficult. I love the turquoise and grey combination!

Please excuse the wrinkledness...

Penelope also had a long day of fabric cutting.

Mustache Fun!

I love the Envelope Clutch pattern from Noodlehead and have been looking for the perfect fabric to sew one up. When I came across the mustache fabric I knew it was meant to be!

This fabric makes me think of my baby sister (who is not so "baby" anymore!). So I whipped one up for her :-)

I love the bright fuchsia interior. Linings is one of my favorite part of the bags. I really try to choose fun fabrics to make the bags just a bit different :-)

This was my very first zipper pocket! I was a bit nervous, but the instructions from Anna were so clear it was super easy. I can't believe I've been avoiding them this whole time!

After I was done, I like it so much I made another for my shop, here.  Now just to make one for me :-)

Now I need to get back on a baby quilt for my friend. Baby shower is in 2 weeks!

Open!

It's not an April Fools joke... my Etsy shop is open!  You can access my shop here:

Calico Kiwi

I'll be adding new items as I finish them, and love to do custom orders too! So if you'd like anything custom, just send me a message and I'll set up a listing.

Here is a sneak peak at what's up in the shop.

I'm so excited to be open, and can't wait to add more fun items :-)

New Closet

Every woman's dream... a large, beautiful, organized closet. We have a pretty big master closet, but by no means was it organized, which by default means it was not beautiful either, haha.  With the projects in the kitchen done (more on that on another post) we moved onto the closet last weekend.

First, our before picture. It is not this bad on a normal day - we had company coming over so I just shoved everything in the closet.  However, the overall set up was not great in general. There was one shelf that went around the whole closet, leaving a good bit of wasted space on top and bottom. Our old house in Louisiana had 2 shelves around the whole closet for some double decker organization action, so we figured we'd try that approach again.

We moved this shelf down to waist level and added another row across the top.  The cats had fun playing on the shelves.

I also got some cute boxes from Lowe's and Target to help organize the things I wanted to keep on the shelves.  I'm so happy with the end result! It's so much more organized and so much more space!!

My clothes are on top and Mr. Kiwi's are on the bottom. He's a tad more... particular... about the way his clothes are organized :-)

Left out the bottom shelf here to allow room for my dresses, and our dirty laundry bins.

Saving the best for last... you see that on the left? That is my wall of purses!!!  :-)

It was actually the hub's idea. I have hooks to hang up the bags I use the most and then a basket on the shelf to hold the rest (yes, I have a ton of bags...)

Now, I think we're finally done with projects for a while. Could use a bit of relaxation time, until the hubby gets bored again, hehe.

Where in the world?

I love maps... I am obsessed with maps... I have a college degree in geography. I found this bag on Pinterest a few weeks ago and splurged a bit and ordered it - I did check with the seller that it will be right side up :-)

However, I can't stop there. I see this fabric all over Etsy.

From Sky Turtle on Etsy

From chezlele on Etsy

...but I cannot find it anywhere! :-(

I've probably spent hours searching the internet for this fabric and have not been able to find it. Somehow it just doesn't feel quite right to convo one of these lovely shops and ask where they bought it, so I will continue to search. One day this fabric will be mine...

Freestylin'

Thought I would share my picture from today - I think I'll try to share one a week.

Today we have Dance Central 2 - or as I like to call it "this is working out right?"

With each routine you have a "freestyle" section where you just do what you want, then it plays it back to you in super speed.  I do not recommend doing dance central in a baggy T-shirt and sweat pants, or else you look like you have no shape at all. I swear my torso is not just a big box...

As far as crafting goes, I'm working on a quilt for one of my close friends that is having her first baby. She's due in June and the baby shower is not till May, but I'm avoiding finishing my queen size quilt because it scares me a little and wanted to switch to something smaller. Plus the fabric is so cute! I'll post pics once she has it :-)

365 Photos

I'm getting a bit of a late start, but I decided to do the 365 photo project. I'm taking a photo a day, every day, for the rest of the year. Of course this is a leap year, so it's really 366... but I'm late so it's really 326, if we want to be technical about it.

Anyway... thought I would share the pic from today.

We ordered our annual King Cakes to take into work, they just haven't made it there yet.  I think the kitties will be a little upset when they are gone.
